Don’t Be a Money Mule: How to Spot the Scam Before It’s Too Late
At TruEnergy FCU, protecting our members goes beyond secure technology, it’s also about helping you stay informed. One of the fastest-growing types of fraud we’re seeing is something called a “money mule” scam and it could be closer to home than you think.
🕵️♀️ What Is a Money Mule?
A money mule is someone who transfers or moves stolen money on behalf of someone else, often without realizing they’re part of a crime. Scammers trick people into helping them launder money by making the job sound legitimate. If you’re caught doing it (even unknowingly), you could be held legally responsible.
🎯 How They Target You
Scammers often pretend to be:
-
A company offering remote or “easy money” jobs
-
A romantic partner or new friend you met online
-
Someone who “accidentally” sent you money and asks you to send it back
-
A military officer, government worker, or someone else you might instinctively trust
They’ll ask you to receive money into your account and then transfer it elsewhere, usually through gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
🚩 Red Flags to Watch For
-
A stranger asks to use your account for “just one transaction.”
-
You’re offered payment for opening a new bank account or sharing yours
-
You’re told to keep the transaction a secret
-
The person avoids video calls or insists they “can’t meet in person”
-
You’re pressured to act quickly and told you’ll get a reward later
💡 What You Can Do
-
Never accept money from someone you don’t know and trust
-
Don’t agree to transfer money on behalf of someone else
-
If it feels strange, it probably is. Stop and ask us before acting
